Special recognition for breast cancer and emergency medicine research
March 11, 2014
Dr. Mark Clemons
and
Dr. Ian Stiell
were featured in the Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario (CAHO) newsletter for leading research studies that have improved patient care at The Ottawa Hospital and around the world. Dr. Clemons discovered that the molecular characteristics of an individual’s breast cancer can change as the cancer spreads to other organs, and re-checking these characteristics will often open up new treatment options or suggest strategies that are more likely to work for a given patient. Dr. Stiell’s Canadian C-Spine Rule aims to reduce emergency department wait times and increase patient satisfaction by quickly identifying patients who do not require immobilization on a backboard for a neck injury. Dr. Stiell has implemented this project in hospitals across Ontario through CAHO’s
Adopting Research to Improve Care
(ARTIC) program.
