$1.2M to advance the treatment of pancreatic cancer
April 2, 2014
The Canadian Cancer Society has awarded
Dr. John Bell
an Impact Grant totalling $1.2 million over the next five years to further his research into the use of viruses to fight pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of cancer. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, an estimated 4,700 people in this country were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2013 and 4,300 people died of the disease. The five-year relative survival rate of pancreatic cancer is only eight per cent. A world leader in oncolytic viruses, Dr Bell’s work has the potential to result in a highly targeted therapy for pancreatic cancer with fewer side effects than current treatment methods.
