Dr. Barbara Vanderhyden honoured by Governor General for volunteerism
April 15, 2014
On April 7,
Governor General David Johnston
presented
Dr. Barbara Vanderhyden
with a distinguished “Caring Canadian Award” for her dedicated volunteerism. In honouring Dr. Vanderhyden, Governor General Johnston noted her work establishing the “Let’s Talk Science” program in 1993, which later became a national charitable organization. In 2006, Dr. Vanderhyden established and still runs “Science Travels,” which provides workshops in remote northern First Nations and Inuit communities. Additionally, Dr. Vanderhyden holds volunteer leadership positions with Ovarian Cancer Canada and finds time to meet with women who struggle with ovarian cancer.
Dr. Jack Kitts
, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Ottawa Hospital, said that volunteers such as Dr. Vanderhyden “help us achieve our Hospital’s vision of providing each patient and visitor with the world-class care, exceptional service and compassion that we want for our loved ones.” Following the award presentation,
Dr. Duncan Stewart
toured Governor General Johnston through the Sinclair Centre for Regenerative Medicine on the 6th floor of the Critical Care Wing at the General Campus.
