New brain imaging approach could help prevent strokes

December 17, 2014

New research led by Dr. Jeffrey Perry shows that a CT scan done within 24 hours of a mild, non-disabling stroke can help determine which patients are likely to suffer a subsequent stroke in the near future. In addition, this is the first study to show that different patterns of damage in the brain can predict when a patient will be at the highest risk of another stroke. For example, patients with certain kinds of brain damage faced an eight fold risk within 90 days. This prospective, multi-centre cohort study could lead to better approaches for tailoring preventative treatments to those who need them most. For details, see the original paper in the journal Stroke, the media release or BBC News.
