$100,000 research grant to study ovarian cancer stem cells

Dr.
Barbara Vanderhyden
has been granted $100,000 by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) to advance her work in the area of ovarian cancer stem cells. Her research focuses on better understanding the origins and development of ovarian cancer and the stem cells that lead to the growth of tumours in women’s reproductive system. Specifically, Dr. Vanderhyden’s research looks into the risk of developing ovarian cancer after ovulation has occurred and the ovary is repairing itself. The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) is the research arm of The Ottawa Hospital and is an affiliated institute of the University of Ottawa, closely associated with the university’s Faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences. OHRI includes more than 1,700 scientists, clinical investigators, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and staff conducting research to improve the understanding, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human disease.
