Dr. Sebastien Gilbert is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Ottawa and a Thoracic Surgeon at The Ottawa Hospital.

Background:
Dr. Gilbert graduated with honors from McGill University School of Medicine and completed his General Surgery residency at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. He obtained further training in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. He gained additional subspecialty fellowship certification in advanced minimally invasive thoracic surgery and lung transplantation in Pittsburgh. Dr. Gilbert began his career as a thoracic and lung transplantation surgeon at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. He then joined the Division of Thoracic Surgery of the Ottawa hospital as an Associate Professor in January 2010. He was appointed Interim Head of the Division of Thoracic Surgery in 2013 and he was Division Head from 2014 to 2024. He was promoted to the rank of Professor of Surgery in 2019. Through his involvement in the administrative facet of healthcare at TOH and as an active member of the medical staff, Dr. Gilbert has invested time and energy in quality improvement and in fostering an environment where all team members can flourish and succeed. As a member off the Medical Staff Association Executive since 2023, he has been an advocate for physicians and surgeons working at The Ottawa Hospital and will continue to develop and implement initiatives to promote wellness.
Clinical Interest and Research:
Dr. Gilbert's primary clinical focus is minimally invasive aerodigestive surgery which involves the use of bronchoscopy, esophagoscopy, thoracoscopy, and the laparoscopy in the treatment of diseases affecting the lungs, mediastinum, esophagus, and stomach. He has developed expertise in uniportal video-assisted thoracic surgery (uVATS) and in robotic thoracic surgery. Dr. Gilbert is contributing to the refinement and development of new and existing minimally invasive approaches to the treatment of diseases such as, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, lung cancer, mediastinal tumors, gastroesophageal reflux disease, hiatus hernia, achalasia and esophageal diverticulum. Dr. Gilbert's research endeavors involve surgical quality and efficiency, as well as, leveraging the power of artificial intelligence to enhance patient care across the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of thoracic surgical care.
