Over $18 million in CIHR funding for uOttawa researchers

October 30, 2007

Researchers at the University of Ottawa and its affiliate research institutions have received over $18 million in grants and scholarships from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). The funding will be distributed among 88 projects at the University of Ottawa as well as at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI), the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, the University’s partner institutions.

“The University of Ottawa is home to many great researchers who make invaluable contributions to society by advancing knowledge and training the next generation of researchers and health professionals,” says Mona Nemer, Vice-President, Research. “By supporting their endeavours, CIHR help foster talent and innovation in health sciences which will benefit all Canadians.”

“We are extremely proud of our recent winners,” stated Dr. Jacques Bradwejn, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. “CIHR funding is one of the most prestigious awards and here at the University of Ottawa we are consistently demonstrating that we have the best and the brightest talent to emerge as leaders in the competitive field of health research.”

The University of Ottawa and its affiliated institutes have consistently achieved a high success rate in major CIHR grant competitions, and on this occasion the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (the research arm of The Ottawa Hospital) was awarded more regular operating grants than any other research institute in the country.

“We are delighted that OHRI scientists were awarded 19 CIHR operating grants in this competition alone,” said Dr. Duncan Stewart, the OHRI’s CEO and Scientific Director. “This is a remarkable accomplishment and a testament to the growing strength of the OHRI, the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital in cutting-edge health research.”
