Dr. Fraser Scott recognized for diabetes research

February 12, 2014

Dr. Fraser Scott is receiving the Earle W. Crampton Award for Distinguished Service in Nutrition from McGill University for “outstanding accomplishments in the area of immunology and the gut microbiome, and their relation to the development of type 1 diabetes”. Dr. Scott is well known for discovering that wheat proteins promote the development of type 1 diabetes in certain animal models. A follow up study demonstrated a wheat-induced immune response linked to diabetes risk genes in nearly half of patients with this form of diabetes. His group has also made important contributions to understanding the role of gut bacteria, the gut immune system and pancreas regeneration in type 1 diabetes.
