Ottawa Hospital Research Institute Salary Disclosure for 2013

March 28, 2014

March 28, 2014 – The Ottawa Hospital (TOH), together with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, today released its annual salary disclosure for employees earning more than $100,000 per year.

Approximately two-thirds of the individuals on the list are frontline health-care providers, including nurses, pathologists, psychologists, physicists, scientists, pharmacists and other health professionals. The remaining third includes management (vice-presidents, clinical directors, medical directors, directors and managers), many of whom perform clinical roles.

The Ottawa Hospital and its research institute ensure that staff members are compensated appropriately for their leadership roles and with compensation determined through a comparative analysis of peer hospitals. The Ottawa Hospital is within the provincial average compared to similar academic centres in Ontario, such as Hamilton Health Sciences, London Health Sciences Centre, Mount Sinai Hospital, St. Michael’s Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and University Health Network.

Dr. Duncan Stewart is Chief Executive Officer and Scientific Director of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, the research arm of one of Ontario’s largest hospitals. His salary is established by the institute's Board of Directors and is comparable to people in similar positions at other academic health centres. Under Dr. Stewart’s leadership, The Ottawa Hospital has been ranked fourth among Canadian hospitals in total research funding and third in peer-reviewed funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Dr. Stewart’s remuneration is based on a salary survey and report by a third-party expert in the field.

In addition to his leadership role at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, Dr. Stewart also has leadership roles in organizations such as the Association of Canadian Academic Healthcare Organizations, the Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario, Research Canada, the Ottawa Life Sciences Cluster of Invest Ottawa and Hypertension Canada. He maintains an active basic research laboratory and clinical research team, and he recently launched the first clinical trial in the world of an enhanced stem cell therapy for heart attacks. Dr. Stewart also leads the Canadian Vascular Network, one of three new national research networks, two of which are being led by The Ottawa Hospital.
