Grant awarded to increase the use of aerobic exercise with stroke patients

June 16, 2014

Marianne Thornton in the Clinical Epidemiology Department, along with a team of experts, has been awarded $70,000 by the Heart and Stroke Foundation Canadian Partnership for Stroke Recovery and the Dr. Tony Hakim Stroke Research Award to help close the gap between evidence and clinical practice regarding aerobic exercise in stroke rehabilitation. Despite overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of aerobic exercise for people who have had a stroke, many clinicians and physiotherapists do not incorporate it into their recovery programs, often fearing that it may be too difficult or potentially dangerous. Ms. Thornton’s project will examine whether an e-learning program can improve clinical implementation of aerobic exercise for stroke patients.
