Ottawa-led team stands out for patient decision aids research

October 8, 2019

Dr. Dawn StaceyDr. Dawn Stacey has earned the distinction of having her Cochrane systematic review cited more than any other Cochrane Review published in 2018. Cochrane Reviews are internationally recognized as the highest standard in evidence-based health care.

According to The Cochrane Library, “Decision aids for people facing health treatments or screening decisions,” was the most-cited Cochrane Review published in 2018 out of 1,558 reviews. A total of 119 publications referenced this study.

The review, conducted by an international team lead by Dr. Stacey, reports on the effectiveness of patient decision aids that are used to help people weigh the benefits and harms of treatment and screening options. Dr. Stacey and her team also maintain the world’s largest inventory of patient decision aids, which typically generates over 30,000 page views per year and over 700,000 on other website resources. Their decision aids are used by patients and health-care providers at The Ottawa Hospital and around the world.

"Decision aids can help patients understand the options, harms and side effects of a treatment so that they can make a decision that aligns with their priorities,” said Dr. Dawn Stacey, senior scientist at The Ottawa Hospital and professor at the University of Ottawa.
