This endowed chair was created thanks to generous donations from the late Ms. Wood and her family to The Ottawa Hospital Foundation. The Chair is meant to provide protected time for a clinician scientist to focus on kidney research.
Dr. Hundemer joined The Ottawa Hospital in 2018 as a nephrologist in the Department of Medicine, associate scientist in the OHRI Clinical Epidemiology Program and assistant professor at the University of Ottawa.
His research focuses on hypertension (high blood pressure), a leading cause of kidney disease. He is particularly interested in a difficult-to-treat form of hypertension that is associated with a hormonal imbalance (hyperaldosteronism). He is exploring different screening and treatment strategies to provide better, more personalized care for patients with this condition.
“Research is key to improving prevention and treatment of kidney disease,” said Dr. Hundemer. “I’m honoured and grateful to be appointed as the first Lorna Jocelyn Wood Chair for Kidney Research.”
Dr. Hundemer received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University in 2007 and his Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University in 2011. Following medical school, he served four years as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force. He then completed his internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2015 and a nephrology fellowship at the combined Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham & Women’s Hospital in 2018.
Dr. Hundemer’s research is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Kidney Foundation of Canada and the Department of Medicine. All research at The Ottawa Hospital is also enabled by The Ottawa Hospital Foundation.
