Dr. Deborah Siegal honoured for groundbreaking blood research

February 25, 2025

Dr. Deborah Siegal Dr. Deborah Siegal has been awarded the prestigious Joe Doupe Young Investigator Award from the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation in recognition of her groundbreaking research on treatments for blood clots and blood transfusions.

Her rigorous and patient-focused research has changed clinical practice and improved patient care around the world. For example, she led a clinical trial that showed that a new treatment to quickly stop dangerous bleeding in patients taking blood thinners was effective and safe, leading to its approval.

She also led a clinical trial that showed that using tubes that automatically collect less blood for testing can reduce the need for blood transfusions in intensive care units, with important benefits for patients and the health-care system. She is also conducting innovative research to better understand the connection between stroke and cancer, which could potentially help with cancer screening.

This is the second time in three years that a researcher from TOH/uOttawa has won this prestigious national award, with Dr. Natasha Kekre winning it in 2023.
