Dr. Dylan Burger awarded $192,000 to study microparticles in kidney and vascular disease
August 5, 2015
Stress often leads to increased sweating in people, but in cells, stress can lead to a more extreme form of sweating, in which the cells shed tiny pieces of themselves called microparticles. Dr.
Dylan Burger
has found that kidney cells release these microparticles when exposed to the kind of stress that can lead to kidney disease. He is now looking to see if microparticles in urine may be able to help identify kidney disease earlier. He is also investigating a possible role for microparticles in the development and progress of kidney and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Burger was recently awarded $192,000 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, through the John R. Evans Leaders Fund, to support infrastructure required for this research. See
media release
for details.
