Together, research activity at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) totalled $140 million in 2017-18, up from $137 million the previous year. With their results being combined, this places them in fifth spot among all hospitals in Canada for research activity, or seventh spot when provincial health authorities are included. This data was released today by Research Infosource.
“We’re very proud to be ranked as one of the top research hospitals in Canada,” said Dr. Duncan Stewart, Executive Vice-President of Research at The Ottawa Hospital and professor at the University of Ottawa. “In recent years, we’ve seen particular growth in research areas such as regenerative medicine and cancer immunotherapy, as well as in clinical trials and knowledge translation. This research is providing our patients with new treatment options and giving us the tools to continuously improve quality, safety and efficiency of care.”
“Maximizing regional and interdisciplinary research to solve major health issues related to cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment has helped us achieve this ranking,” said Dr. Peter Liu, Chief Scientific Officer and Vice-President Research at the UOHI. “And, our investment in recruiting and retaining the best and the brightest minds is paying off as we train the next generation of high caliber investigators.”
Notable research successes from The Ottawa Hospital and the UOHI from the last year include:
- An innovative laboratory study that revealed for the first time how a blood stem cell decides what kind of cell it will give rise to – a key insight that could lead to new treatments for devastating blood diseases.
- A cross-Canada collaboration that unravelled the mystery of how one gene contributes to Parkinson’s, Crohn’s and leprosy.
- A big data study that uncovered sex differences in Ontario in long-term survival after cardiac surgery such as bypass, paving the way for future research to improve outcomes for women.
The Ottawa Hospital, together with the UOHI, also ranks third among more than 600 hospitals in Canada for competitive, peer-reviewed funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
