The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute is the research arm of The Ottawa Hospital – one of Canada’s largest learning and research hospitals. We are proudly affiliated with the University of Ottawa and supported by The Ottawa Hospital Foundation. With more than 2,200 scientists, clinician investigators, trainees and staff, and total revenues of more than $120 million, we are one of the foremost Canadian hospital-based research institutes. Our research spans more than a hundred different diseases, conditions, and specialties with an overall focus on translating discoveries and knowledge into better health.

Job description

A PDF in the Crawley lab would be immersed in an active research program focused on deciphering the underlying mechanisms of immune cell dysfunction in chronic liver disease, concentrated in viral hepatitis and metabolic liver disease and HCC. Research questions are pursued in both human contexts with tight clinical relationships and relevance, as well as in well-developed animal models. A focus on generalized CD8 T cell hyperfunction in chronic liver disease is uncovering exciting new research avenues to identify driving mechanisms. Access to emerging RNA sequencing and ATACseq data sets offers a wealth of potential research questions to choose and pursue through PDF+PI-directed research questions. Opportunities to explore additional macrophage research are also included in lab's research program. There are many research opportunities available, with excellent opportunities for publications within the first year, including both primary research articles and review articles as well as direct participation in the preparation of research grant applications with the PI. Opportunities for national scholarship applications are encouraged. Supervision of graduate students, and collaboration with technical staff and research associates is expected.

Basic Requirements

  • Obtained PhD within the last 5 years, preferably 3 yrs or less, for remaining eligibility for external scholarship opportunities. PhD training would ideally be in a field with a concentration in immunology.
  • Expertise in liver immunology/biology, viral hepatitis, metabolic liver disease or chronic disease (pathogen- or non-pathogen-mediated) would be an asset.
  • Expertise in mouse models is an asset, as would be expertise in working with human primary immune cells.
  • Experience with high-throughput flow cytometry or mass cytometry is preferred, as would be big data analysis skills.
  • Demonstrated strong English writing and oral communications are important, and references should confirm this.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in biology/immunology
