Job description

The Site Director will be a member of ICES uOttawa and holds an ICES Scientist Appointment but is not considered an employee of ICES. This is an appointed position that reports to the CEO and Scientific Director of OHRI and is also accountable to the CEO of ICES. The Site Director will be responsible for supervising the daily management and operations at ICES uOttawa including the hiring and managing of staff, assuring compliance with ICES policies and procedures, and will be accountable for site performance. The Site Director represents the site’s management committee in discussions with the ICES Chief Operating Officer and ICES CEO on matters related to ICES policy compliance and strategy and regularly updates both the OHRI CEO and ICES CEO on matters related to ICES uOttawa research activities. The time commitment for this appointment is estimated to be approximately 1 day per week. 

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Decision-making for ICES uOttawa based on ICES’ mandate and consistent with ICES’ strategic directions and priorities.
  • Ensures site compliance and adherence to ICES policies and procedures, including effective implementation of the Site Agreement.
  • Champions and promotes ICES uOttawa within the Ottawa research community, including hosting training sessions and webinars
  • Recruits and mentors new scientists and trainees and support the nominations of new scientists at ICES uOttawa to the Program Leaders Committee.
  • Provides input into ICES uOttawa Scientists’ annual reviews with ICES Program Leaders as required.
  • Acts as liaison with other ICES Sites and provides collaborative assistance to the Site Directors of other ICES Sites as required.
  • Active member of the Program Leaders’ Committee and the Site Directors Committee, attending regularly and representing ICES uOttawa on other committees as required.
  • Oversight of ICES uOttawa personnel and Scientists including adherence to ICES Network policies.
  • Ensures good communication between ICES uOttawa personnel and ICES personnel.
  • Works with ICES uOttawa personnel and Scientists to resolve disputes and involving ICES as required.
  • Fosters and maintains effective communications with OHRI, ICES, and local and regional parties, and Site funding partners
  • Ensures submission to ICES and OHRI, of information on relevant outputs and deliverables, including, but not limited to, productivity reports to the MOHLTC and a scientific report to the ICES Scientific Advisory Committee of the Board.
  • Participates in performance or operational evaluations at the discretion of ICES and OHRI
  • Leads the auditing and reporting process for ICES uOttawa and OHRI as described in the Site Agreement.
  • In collaboration with the OHRI, 
    •    Provides input and approval of the operational budget and financial reporting to ICES and OHRI
    •    Chairs the ICES uOttawa Management Committee 
    •    Helps raise operational funds as needed 
    •    Informs on Site’s activities and achievements
    •    Maintains an awareness of internal and external factors that may impact ICES uOttawa operations including Site Security and data privacy.
    •    Maintains an awareness of site activities including those by Facility/ Physical Security Site Manager, Privacy, Risk and Compliance Analyst, IT personnel, and Institutional Security Services. 

Skills and Experiences:

  • ICES Full Status Scientist in good standing
  • Holds a scientific appointment at OHRI and an academic appointment at the University of Ottawa
  • Experience using health administrative data for scientific research
  • Experience with and/or a detailed understanding of academic administrative experiences including local research ethics boards, research administration, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence colleagues and promote the establishment of ICES culture and the adoption of ICES’ policies, standards, and procedures
  • Evidence of interest in, and pursuit of, a complete and thorough understanding of ICES policies and procedures related to research, ethics, privacy and security

Remuneration: 

• The Site Director will receive a stipend for this position
