Bio

Dr. Richard Gilbert is a General and Hepatopancreaticobiliary Surgeon at the Ottawa Hospital. He completed his medical school in Cork, Ireland followed by a General Surgery residency at the University of Ottawa. He then completed a two year fellowship in complex Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplant at Vancouver General Hospital.

Dr. Gilbert's clinic interests include complex vascular reconstructions, extended resections for cholangiocarcinoma, pancreaticoduodenectomy, hepatocellular carcinoma and surgical care for patients with advanced liver disease.

Research Goals and Interests


Dr. Gilbert's research interests include quality improvement, care delivery and technical approaches to complex hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB) surgery. 

Specifically: 

1. Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) Care Delivery/Integration: Including the evolving role of Trans Arterial Radio Embolization (TARE) and immunotherapy and how these treatments interface with surgical treatment and transplantation. 

2. Pancreas Cancer Surgical Care Optimization: Including the role of diagnostic laparoscopy and reduction in surgical site infections following pancreatectomy. 

3. Vascular Resection and Reconstruction in Complex Hepatobiliary Surgery. 

4. Surgical Approaches to Hilar Cholangiocarcinoma
