Bio

Dr. Sukhbir (Sony) Singh is Department Head for the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Newborn Care at The Ottawa Hospital and Chair and Full Professor for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Ottawa. He has a clinical practice with a sub-specialty focus on Complex Gynecologic Disorders requiring surgical intervention or advanced medical therapies.

His academic training has included the following:

- Queen's University at Kingston (BSc 1996)
- University of Western Ontario (MD 2000, FRCSC 2005)
- University of Toronto (Fellowship in MIS Gynecology 2006)
- University of Sydney Australia (Fellowship in MIS Gynecology 2007)
- The Ottawa Hospital in Canada (Focused fellowship in Gynecologic Imaging 2021)

Currently he is the Vice-Chair of Gynecology at The Ottawa Hospital and is also the Lead for MIS Gynecology Research at The Shirley E. Greenberg Women's Health Centre.

Recently he was awarded the Dr Elaine Jolly Research Chair in Gynecologic Surgery (2016-2021).

Research Goals and Interests

The Ottawa Minimally Invasive Gynecology Group at OHRI focuses on the following research areas:

  • Endometriosis:  Basic Science and Clinical Investigation
  • Uterine Fibroids:  Clinical Investigation
  • Health Services:  Improving Quality and Patient Experience of Surgical Interventions for Women
  • Education:  Surgical Education for Trainees (Residents/Fellows) and Practicing Surgeons

The Ottawa Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (OMIGS) Research Group is led by Dr. S. Singh (Lead Investigator) and includes a team of clinician researchers, research associates, surgical fellows and students.
Overall, the focus of this research group aligns around specific disease states, the delivery & education of surgical care and health care utilization.
The disease focus is “complex gynecologic conditions” and this includes endometriosis and uterine fibroids. Chronic pelvic pain, infertility and heavy menstrual bleeding are the main symptoms being evaluated. The surgical outcomes/procedures include hysterectomy, laparoscopy and hysteroscopy procedures.
