A renowned expert in birth and pregnancy research, Dr. Shi Wu Wen is retiring after 25 years as a senior scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (Methodological and Implementation Research Program) and professor at the University of Ottawa (Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and School of Epidemiology & Public Health).

His big data work has informed policy around the world and impacted millions of pregnant people and their babies. Some of the topics of his over 419 scientific papers include the use and safety of prescription drugs and vaccinations during pregnancy. His work also informed best practices regarding assisted reproductive technology, prenatal glucose screening, c-sections, epidurals and twin delivery.

In addition, Dr. Wen led an international clinical trial that found high doses of folic acid during pregnancy do not prevent preeclampsia, reversing a common practice.

At OHRI, Dr. Wen worked with Dr. Mark Walker and others to create an internationally recognized research group in perinatal epidemiology. He has mentored more than 70 trainees and served on the Ottawa Health Science Network Research Ethics Board.

Dr. Wen will continue as an Emeritus Senior Scientist in the Methodological and Implementation Research Program, further cementing his legacy of scientific excellence and commitment to practice-changing research.
