New supports aim to grow nursing research

Nurses play a critical role in both leading and supporting research at TOH. In recognition of this important role, TOH and OHRI recently created a new initiative focused on supporting and facilitating nursing and interprofessional research: the INSPIRE Interprofessional Research Community of Practice. This initiative was informed by the Health Professionals Research Interest and Capacity Survey, which was distributed over the summer.

Through close consultation with INSPIRE’s members, four areas were identified as priorities for supporting nursing research including:
•    Research skill development
•    Addressing barriers to research
•    Recognizing the value of nursing engagement in research
•    Developing platforms for mentorship, networking and collaboration

Nurses interested in joining INSPIRE or learning more about research are encouraged to contact Stephen Daniels (stdaniels@ohri.ca).

Furthermore, on May 14, 2026 at noon, TOH’s Nursing Professional Practice Coordinator for Research, Sophia Gocan, will facilitate an internal event titled “Behind the Scenes of Nursing QI & Research: Journeys and Lessons Learned.” This will involve a panel of nurses involved in research who will share their personal stories about how they got involved in QI and research, what they learned along the way and the moments that mattered most. Each panellist will share one actionable takeaway that attendees can use to begin their own journey.

This is one of many special events planned for TOH’s Nursing Week (May 11-17, 2026).

Please take time next week to recognize all the incredible nurses at TOH and OHRI for their outstanding contributions to research, patient care and education.
