Four scientists from The Ottawa Hospital, affiliated with the University of Ottawa, were successful in the recent discovery grant competition from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Dr. Barbara Vanderhyden and David Cook were awarded $247,000 to identify the specific pathways needed for ovarian cancer to spread, and what factors trigger this. Dr. Antonio Colavita was awarded $212,000 to explore how the DIP-2 protein influences the shape and movement of nerve cells, and describe the molecular mechanisms involved. Dr. Johnny Ngsee was awarded $188,000 to determine how vesicles move to the cell’s nuclear envelope and the consequences of disrupting this. Dr. Xiaohui Zha was awarded $141,000 to investigate the biological role of a fatty molecule called C24 sphingomyelin in organizing cell walls and interacting with cholesterol.
