Four scientists from The Ottawa Hospital, affiliated with the University of Ottawa, were successful in the recent discovery grant competition from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Dr. Theodore Perkins was awarded $205,000 to improve high-throughput DNA sequencing, an important tool in health research. Dr. Hsiao-Huei Chen was awarded $200,000 to explore how early life experiences alter how brain resident immune cells called microglia affect mood regulation and anxiety. Dr. Robin Parks was awarded $180,000 to determine how the protein kinase DYRK2 regulates cell death and immunity in response to substances that damage DNA. Dr. Christina Addison was awarded $160,000 to investigate how microRNA controls the formation of new blood vessels.
Research at The Ottawa Hospital is possible because of generous donations to The Ottawa Hospital Foundation.
