Fostering research excellence, from cells to scientists to countries
By day, Fernando Ortiz leads individual cells through OHRI’s flow cytometer so they can be scanned, sorted, and harnessed for scientific breakthroughs. On evenings and weekends, he leads the Ottawa chapter of the Canadian Spanish Scientists Association (ACERCA/CASSA), bringing researchers from various disciplines together to foster scientific collaboration and excellence.
Fernando recently had the opportunity to help welcome His Majesty the King Felipe VI of Spain to Canada, as part of an official visit focused on strengthening the strategic relationship between our two countries across diplomacy, innovation, industry and scientific cooperation.
During the meeting, Fernando and others shared ACERCA’s vision of a vibrant community of Spanish scientists in Canada contributing not only to cutting-edge research and innovation, but also to the human, academic and institutional connections that unite both countries.
As indicated in this LinkedIn post, His Majesty showed genuine interest in the work, talent and impact of the Spanish scientific community abroad and in the opportunities to continue strengthening bilateral collaboration in science and technology.
This visit also marked significant progress in Canada-Spain cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence and innovation, reinforcing a shared commitment to knowledge, research and international collaboration.
From cells to scientists to countries, Fernando continues to shine a light on cutting-edge research and advance its impact.
